We opened the doors to our first Squat & Gobble location at 237 Fillmore Street with a dream and a desire to start a business that was going to help serve the community. 22 years later, we have made countless memories and friendships with our customers, whom we view as family.

Over the years, we have watched the neighborhood change, businesses come and go, but one thing has remained constant, our desire to create a fun, clean environment where we could welcome you all to experience great conversation and even better food. We have loved every minute of it and wouldn’t change it for the world.

Even though we are closing our Fillmore location, we know that all of our memories and friendships will continue to live on. We thank you all for your patronage and loyalty to Squat & Gobble and we look forward to serving you at our other San Francisco locations.

Thank you Fillmore, you have been good to us!

More than a year after a fire shut its doors, the Squat and Gobble restaurant in San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood will reopen Wednesday morning in a ceremony attended by local businesspeople, firefighters and Mayor Ed Lee.

Squat and Gobble sustained $900,000 in structural damage and $1 million in property loss in a four-alarm fire on Oct. 12, 2012.

After being shut for almost 17 months, the restaurant at 1 West Portal Avenue has been rebuilt from the ground up. It will reopen with a new interior design and an added second floor to be used as a private dining and meeting space, according to Phil Siegel, a spokesman for the restaurant.

Squat and Gobble is part of a local restaurant group with five locations in San Francisco. The first location opened 20 years ago on Fillmore Street, according to owner Issa Sweiden.

“We are starting our 21st year in a wonderful space that will be a gathering place for the neighborhood,” Sweiden said in a statement.

The blaze caused a total of $7 million in damage to three buildings, and two firefighters were injured fighting it.

Mayor Ed Lee will cut the ribbon to reopen Squat and Gobble tomorrow and thank firefighters for preventing the fire from spreading beyond the corner of West Portal Avenue and Ulloa Street.

The four Squat and Gobble locations have changed their on-tap beer selection for the entire month of April to honor San Francisco and the SF Giants. Each of the four restaurants will only serve microbrews that are created in the Bay Area. These include BREW FREE! OR DIE IPA, DRAKES AMBER ALE, TRUMMER PILS and PROHIBITION ALE among others. And to add to baseball fever, the beers can also be accompanied by specially-created garlic fries that have been added to the menu to honor the world champs.

“This is a month of pride for the city,” according to Robert McGown, General Manager. “We are using this promotion to let our customers decide which of these beers will be added to the menu permanently.”

A pint of the micro-brews is only $2.75 with food purchase, or a tasting flight of all four will also be $2.75.

Every Tuesday, Spaghetti and Ice Cream

San Francisco, Calif. (March 31, 2011) – San Francisco restaurant chain Squat & Gobble announces that it will begin ‘Kids Eat Free’ starting April 5th. The restaurant invites its customers to dine with their children on Tuesday nights from 5 – 10 p.m. and with each adult entrée that is purchased, they will receive a free plate of spaghetti and a scoop of ice cream for the child.

Squat & Gobble aims at providing a family friendly dining experience and the goal of this promotion is to encourage adults to spend a night out with their children. The restaurant has five convenient San Francisco neighborhood locations including West Portal, Upper Haight, Fillmore Street, 16th & Market and the Marina.

“We want to offer a program that allows parents a break from the hectic lifestyles that we all lead. I invite you to bring your children into our restaurant on Tuesday nights so that we can cook dinner for your child and give you a chance to relax and enjoy dinner out,” explains Issa Sweidan, managing partner of the Squat & Gobble family of restaurants.

Kids Eat Free Night at Squat & Gobble will be offered at all five locations. The offer is valid until supplies last.

Gives Diners More Al Fresco Options

San Francisco, Calif. (March 3, 2011) – San Francisco restaurant chain Squat & Gobble debuted its new parklet space at the Castro District location this weekend. The parklet, a part of San Francisco’s Pavements to Parks program, will add to Squat & Gobble’s existing outdoor patio area and offers a relaxing community area off of the sidewalk area just outside of the restaurant.

Squat & Gobble’s reputation as a premier breakfast and lunch spot with a “San Francisco feel” made it a prime choice for a parklet location. Parklets make use of unused street space, turning stretches of extra concrete into community niches of hip gardens, outdoor seating and bicycle space. Customers at the Squat & Gobble Castro location will now be able to enjoy the restaurant’s full menu while seated in the parklet, which extends from the sidewalk out onto spaces previously used for parking.

“We’re honored and excited to have been awarded one of the parklet spaces. This comes just in time for the warm spring weather that is ahead. We invite our customers from all over the city to visit our new outdoor space at our Castro District location,” explains Issa Sweiden, owner of the Squat & Gobble family of restaurants.

The Pavements to Parks program relies on community involvement in picking a proposed parklet site. Community residents expressed their interests in Squat & Gobble as a popular location in the community that opened out onto a narrow sidewalk.

The new parklet is one of fifteen that have been completed or started in San Francisco so far and this is the only space of its kind in the Castro District.

Squat & Gobble is located at 3600 16th and Market St, in the Castro District. Squat & Gobble has four other neighborhood locations in Upper Haight, Fillmore Street, West Portal and the Marina. The full menu is available all day, and includes dinner specials.
